BUT... WHAT IS IT?

WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

  • The word 'TAE KWON DO' or 태권도 in Korean roughly means "Way of the Foot and Fist."

  • It refers to the standard usage of the body via the arm (the fastest major external body part) and the leg (the farthest-reaching external body part) as tools for self-defense.

HISTORY OF TAEKWONDO

  • Taekwondo is a Korean martial art developed mainly in the 20th century. 

  • It is the modern-day descendant of ancient Korean forms of self defense especially Subak and Taekkyeon. These ancient art forms date back more than 2,000 years!

 

  • The first governing body of the sport was the Korean Taekwondo Association, founded in 1953. It still operates to this day and is known as World Taekwondo

 

  • The sport quickly spread around the world and the United States Taekwondo Association was formed in 1967. 

 

  • Competitors from 19 nations participated in the first World Taekwondo Championship in 1973. 

 

  • Taekwondo, the national sport of Korea, was first exhibited at the Summer Olympics in 1988 in Seoul, Korea.

  • It was first officially held as an Olympic sport at the Summer Olympics in 2004, in Athens, Greece.

Today, Taekwondo is the world's most practiced martial art with around 80 million practitioners in 200 countries!!!​

HOW IS IT DONE?

  • The sport of Taekwondo is renowned for it's extensive use of the legs and feet. 

 

  • It's primary techniques involve kicks, slides, steps, and stances which promote balance, stability, and coordination.

 

  • Punches, strikes, and blocks are also implemented in a sub-art of Taekwondo called POOMSAE.

WHY TAEKWONDO?

  • It's awesome exercise!!

  • Its high-impact, fast-paced movements are great for those individuals who can't sit still; while stimulating their mind, strengthening their body, and disciplining their soul. 

  • Taekwondo is perfect for kids and adults alike to keep them active, strong, and healthy! 

  • Might as well learn some self-defense while you're at it!!
